APP can produce HDR files.
A backplate is a photograph into which the modeled 3d car will be placed. The HDR shot is used to light the car in a realistic way.
You don't need 11500 x 5750 sized images, that was just an example of the image sizes they get with their equipment.
If you want to know more about HDRi, its pointless for me to duplicate what has already been said on these forums countless times and what there is plenty of information on on the Internet, I would suggest you start with wikipedia or google http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging

And a HDR panorama shot where the camera is standing is used for lighting the car.

So the point of a backplate is to impose a car onto it, and the panorama shot from precisely the spot where the car will be standing is used to make the lighting on the car and reflections all look real.

So you want to find a nice spot to show off a car (e.g. road curve in a forest), decide where exactly the car will be placed, shoot a normal photo of that view as if the car was already there, so your clients or son can superimpose the car onto it, and then go to the spot wherever you imagined the car to be standing and shoot a  360 from there.
