[APP 1.4.2] Problem stitching 2 images with different focal length

Hi all,

I'm trying to do a composition with APP and can´t stitch together 2 images ( resized ) with different focal lengths:

_MG_6059.jpg ( 200 mm, helicopter in earth )
_MG_6091.jpg ( 55 mm, after take off )

I have tried:
* Change precision of control point detector
* Manual control points
But APP doesn't find any control point between images..

Is there any trick to do that?

The full sized images ( ZIP, ~10MB ) are here ( if you want to try ):

Regards.

There's a limit in the maximum scaling difference we allow to detect. 55mm to 200mm is near that limit. So that's perhaps the reason you won't be able to do that.

Re: [APP 1.4.2] Problem stitching 2 images with different focal length

Hi Alexandre,

Is this limit over the whole pano, or just between the two closest pictures?

It sounds like I can't shoot a picture with a 12mm lens and then fill in with a 200mm lens.  But could I take several intermediate shots, for example one shot at 12mm, one at 24mm, one at 50mm and one at 100mm and one at 200mm, and would they stitch?

Thanks Alexandre, I'm sorry reading that.

mmm.. could that limit be evaluated dinamically from the 2 focal lengths of the image pair passed to the control point detector? I think, if possible it can be a usefull feature because if some object is present in both images APP could estimate the scaling factor for searching control points

Re: [APP 1.4.2] Problem stitching 2 images with different focal length

I attach a screen dump of a stitched solution.

This is the workflow I used:

1. I used 'select images' to load the two source images into a group

2. using the settings icon for that group (spanner + screwdriver) I set 'force every image to be in the same panorama'

3. I then set off detection which did produce a 'panorama' but with no Control Points detected so images unlinked

4. Load this 'panorama' into the panorama editor

5. Start up the Control Point Editor and select both images using ctl-left click

6. In settings for the CPE and at the bottom set CP detection to High

7. Draw marquees round both of the yellow boat on the beach, then select add control points

8. CPs found select, in CPE, optimise

9. In PE select render but be sure blending is set to 'Multiband' - smartblend could suppress the helicopter as a ghost: I haven't tested that

10. Do a render.

Thanks leedsjoe,

I thought I did the same steps when I tried to stitch them all the times.. but maybe I forgot step 6.
