Many use two numbers separated by a spacer in a file name, eg I use the date and a sequence number... yymmdd_seq number.
Currently, I name panos first file name__second file name.
It would be very helpful if I could use first file name_last file name, second number... so that 081012_012__081012_022.psd, would automatically be shortened to 081012_012__022.psd
Thanks

Hum. Did I get that right : first file name is "081012_012.jpg" jpg is for example. Second file name is "081012_022.jpg" right ?
And you want 081012_012__022.psd instead of 081012_012__081012_022.psd, when using "%i %j" template ...
Seems complicated for me to code because file naming could vary a lot. BTW : there one solution for that : 081012 is the folder name, and 012.jpg, 022.jpg is the real file names. That will work this way.

You've got it, but I can't use folder names because the images are named independent of the folders. Each image is given a unique date_serial number name that stays the same for all versions of each image, jpg, psd, etc.
If you permitted say one of three 'spacer' characters like space, hyphen and underscore, Then any file name created with that pattern would have a first and second (or last) part. I got the idea from using Breeze Browser software when I was using a PC. Breeze's renaming scheme found both parts of a file name and permitted the choice of first part or last part as well as the full name.
I appreciate your giving it some thought.
